Linoleum Flooring Information

Linoleum is made from renewable materials such as linseed oil, wood flour and pine rosin. It is basically waterproof, durable; anti static and environmentally friendly (it is biodegradable and creates no toxins).

Additional advantages of Linoleum are that it has antibacterial properties which make it a suitable application for hospital, schools and other commercial or residential application. It is also easy to maintain, easy to repair and cost-effective.

It is often confused with vinyl floor coverings and was actually replaced in popularity by Vinyl flooring during 1960s but due to new designs, new color range and patterns the use of Linoleum is in demand again.

Tips/ Things to Know on Linoleum Product:

  • A good linoleum floor must be coated with high performance stain and scratch layer. Protective coating is a must to ensure durability.
  • You can choose from Linoleum Sheets, Floating Tile Form and Linoleum Tiles.
  • Once installed, don’t be alarm when a new linoleum produces a distinct smell, this is due to the linseed oil content and will disperse in time.
  • A good subfloor is needed especially for linoleum sheet and tiles; otherwise the subfloor defects will show through the surface. Professional installation is also recommended.

 How to Maintain Linoleum Flooring:

  • Linoleum Flooring is very easy to maintain. Regular sweeping and occasional damp mopping.
  • When mopping, you could use water or with a mix of mild detergent.
  • Commercial cleaners are also available.
  • Don’t use rubber or foam on linoleum as it may cause discoloration.
  • When cleaning a no-wax floor, you can add 1 tablespoon of vinegar to prevent soap buildup.
  • Some adds a tablespoon of baby oil to the water (occasionally) to restore the natural oil.
  • Don’t use harsh solvent/ cleaners since this can cause discoloration.
  • Use sealants at least once a year to maintain the durability of your linoleum floor.
